To celebrate the end of our Tudor learning, we held a banquet. We enjoyed feasting on all of the dishes we had prepared. This included, cheese and onion tarts, vegetable pottage, Cornish pasties, plum tart and gingered bread. We washed it all down with a glass of grape juice! A feast fit for Kings and Queens!

In DT this half term, Year 5 have been learning about seasonality and understanding if ingredients have been grown, reared, caught or processed. We looked at a menu from 2025 and compared it to a Tudor menu! We categorised the ingredients according to where they came from and considered which ingredients were seasonal. When choosing our Tudor dishes, we ensured the ingredients were seasonal, and we made some changes/additions to the original recipes.

The Mary Rose Museum 4th Dec 2025

Year 5 had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Mary Rose Museum, where we were able to see the largest collection of Tudor artefacts in the world! The children took part in two workshops; one involved carrying out a science experiment to test the placement of different weights in a container, to see how it affected its ability to float. In the other workshop, we had the opportunity to handle replica artefacts and dress up as different people onboard the Mary Rose. We had such a fun day!

In our final session with the Inspiration Federation, Year 5 used litter to decorate some 3D figures of creatures that are at risk of harm due to littering. The children worked collaboratively to decorate the figures. The project is due to be displayed in Fareham library. We look forward to visiting this display and raising awareness of how litter is harming the environment.

Using the litter that we collected on our litter pick, Year 5 created a piece of artwork. They were provided with a stencil of an animal, to create an image of it. The children then used the litter to create a collage effect.

Year 5 have been taking part in an Environment Science and Art project, led by the Inspiration Federation. The children have learnt about the negative impact of litter upon local wildlife and the environment and also the importance of recycling. After researching the negative impact and making awareness posters, the children visited a local green space and collected litter. After our litter pick we recorded it on a community litter picking website.

To kickstart the new academic year, the school took part in the Take One Picture scheme. This year, the painting was Canaletto's 'A Regatta on the Grand Canal'. Year 5 decided to research the history behind Venetian masks, before designing and creating their very own. We learned how to use paper mache to strengthen our masks. We are thrilled with the finished results!

Year 5 had the opportunity to handle some Tudor replica items, to support us in our learning of what life was like during the Tudor era. First, we observed and handled the artefacts and predicted what each item was, who may have used it and what its purpose was, before learning the factual information. We commented on how in today's world, there is no need for some of the objects, such as pomanders and pattens.

Year 5 were extremely fortunate to visit Henry VIII'S palace, Hampton Court. Whilst there, we were able to experience first-hand what it felt like to walk the cobbled pathways of this magnificent Tudor palace. We were welcomed by Lady Constance, who led our first workshop. This provided us with the opportunity to observe and handle primary sources of evidence, whilst investigating a key question linked to Henry VIII. The second workshop helped immerse us in the role of those who worked in the kitchen and we learned what foods were eaten during the Tudor times. Some really took us by surprise! It was a fantastic trip and was a great hook to lead us into learning more about the Tudor dynasty.
